The global labour movement has a problem: most young people today don’t know what trade unions are and, in most countries (particularly in the West) the trade union population is ageing.
Unite in Schools sets out to fix this problem; to bring young people together to discuss and understand the importance of workplace protection - and collectively campaigning for equality at work and in our communities.
We usually spend an hour in schools (colleges and universities). The students do most of the work (role play, group discussion, quizzes, films) to reach some kind of an understanding of trade unions. We show short films and really encourage the students to talk – to ask us questions. After a good session the students will tell us what TUs are – rather than the other way round.
If you like working with young people, and you are good at getting them talking about the issues they care about, and if you are a good listener - then we want you involved.
You don’t need to be a trade union expert, an education professional or even to fancy yourself as a public speaker. Our facilitators include: active Unite reps, activists, young members, retired trade unionists and community activists. Could you join us?
New facilitators receive 2 full days training, plus ongoing mentoring and support. Our facilitators work in pairs, so you are never on your own. Volunteers receive a payment of £40 per session (of any length – could be an hour, could be a day!) to ensure no-one is out of pocket. We also cover reasonable meal and travel expenses. Facilitators must be either industrial or community members of Unite.
